About the breed
Ragdoll cats are a large, blue-eyed semi-long haired breed which was first established by Ann Baker in California in the early 1960's through cross-breeding of a cat of Angora type called Josephine with Persian and Birman type males or a black and white mitted longhair male, depending on which version of events you subscribe to! After Josephine was involved in a car accident Ann Baker noticed that Josephine's subsequent kittens were extremely friendly (unlike their mother) and had a remarkable tolerance for pain. They also had mat-free coats and became very floppy when picked up - just like a 'ragdoll', thus the name of the breed chosen by Ann Baker. Ann believed the accident had changed the genetic constitution of Josephine, which accounted for the outstanding characteristics in her offspring.
Ragdolls today have retained their characteristic floppiness, excellent temperaments and mat-free coats, however, as all Ragdoll owners will confirm: Ragdolls feel pain just as much as other cats! Ragdolls are recognised in the following colours: blue, seal, chocolate, lilac (however chocolate and lilac are rarely found now) and more recently in red and cream. Recognised Ragdoll coat patterns are colourpoint, bicolour and mitted.
